At Nielsen Elementary School for over four decades, there were two kinds of students: Those who were in Mrs. Botelho's class, and those who wished they were. Sure, you'd study, learn and have more fun than most with Mrs. B, but you'd especially relish the memory of her duck-goose wading pond just outside her classroom, and the end-of-year pool party with all of your classmates at Mrs. Botelho's house. A proud graduate of BYU, Judy was a friend-to-all, a mischievous prankster, and a willing rule-bender if it meant more fun for the group. If you entered her backyard on any given day, you'd likely catch her content and barefoot, watering her countless potted plants by hand, while listening to a broadcast of her beloved A's. If her Raiders were playing, she'd prepare enough sweet treats and salty BBQ for anyone who wanted to join the Oakland cheering section on her living room couch. In fact, she so loved food and family she worked after teaching hours at Gay 90's and Rod's Hick'ry Pit, truly providing service with a smile. Every other time she was vacationing with friends and family, generously funding anyone's desire to parasail or fly a float plane or ride every amusement park ride; while she was content to sit and watch vicariously from a comfortable park bench, snacks at the ready when the adventurers returned. She was at home behind the wheel, whether racing cone-lined slalom track in the parking lot of the Pleasanton Fairgrounds, or RV'ing to faraway places from Mexican beaches to Klamath River salmon runs. She was equally at home on a cruise ship, catching the stage shows, playing multiple Bingo cards, or grabbing all the duty free bargains she could get through customs. She loved a good infomercial, and made sure everyone had a treasure of their own, since buying in bulk meant saving more. Mrs. B had countless dogs and pets which she gave witty names, including a barn owl named "Owliver" and a desert tortoise named "Flash". Judy was an avid list-maker and planner, a nostalgic advocate of mom-and-pop outfits, a procrastinator of paperwork, and not only was she a forgiver of trespassers, she was always ready to provide a meal and warm bed to those lost or rejected. She remains in the fond memories of her daughter Kerie, son Kert, sister Paulene, niece Cristina, nephews Paul and Ben, son-in-law Jeff, and most of all, her #1 favorite human being on the planet, her never-lacking-for-words grandson, Jeffry. No one listened to Jeffry as much or as attentively as Grandma B.
