I'm so sad to hear of Fred's passing. I was a painfully shy, easily intimidated student at Hamilton College in 1979 when I took one of his courses on Milton. Fred had a reputation as a genius and a mensch and he did not disappoint on either. What I do remember clearly was his kindness and encouragement, support that helped me become a published writer.
