Charlie was a wonderful human being and one of my favorite teachers over 20 years ago.  He cared about his students and was fun to be around. Charlie's authentic spirit and kindness was such a gift to people. God bless his family.  Charlie was a very special soul on this planet!  

With everything that's going on right now...the racial division and violent responses, Charlie stood as a bastion for what is good and right with the world. He went everywhere, fit in anywhere, and disarmed even the most staunch racist with his brilliant smile. The world is brighter because of him. My life is better for having known him. I'll miss you 'Charlie Brown'...

Oh Charlie – I worked with him at Office of the Provost when I was young and awkward and navigating my career through SJSU. I always used to call him my work dad (to his face too!), and he spent a lot of time making fun of me (the favor was returned with his on-going printing/computer/typing issues), making me cry (leveling with me on my life issues), and making me laugh with that giant

personality of his. I would see his old students come in constantly, and he remembered EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. He has impacted so many people’s lives, and I can’t put into words how much his time with him meant to me, and that lasting impact he’ll always have on my own life.

I've had the benefit of knowing Charlie for many years. He and my dad (Dr. Paul Brown) were a dynamic duo at SJSU. My dad considered him his best friend; he loved him dearly, as did we all. Charlie brought out the best in everyone. He had a smile that could light up a room and a laugh that could warm any heart. His presence will be missed here, but he and my dad are smiling together again.

I've non-Charlie since the mid-19070s. He has been a friend, mentor, colleague, and supervisor. He introduced me to SJSU in the 1970s and hired me in 1999. We spent many hours just talking as friends. Whenever we talked we spoke about our kids, about existential ideas, the world and its condition, and so many more things that I will miss.

I am so very thankful to have known him for as long as I have, to have known him the way I have, and for him to consider me a friend. I about deeply saddened to hear of his loss. I am very happy that I had a chance to see him a year ago March when he, Michael Lange, Jill Cody, and I had lunch together at Santana Row. We spent about 5 hours together just laugh and remeinsicing.

I last saw him at Michale Lange's celebration of life a year ago May. I will always feel his hand on my shoulder as I was in tears speaking about my Michael who I also knew for more than 40 years. In fact ,Michael introduced me to Charlie. I mourn with the Whitcomb family. Unfortunately, I am out of state and have a very complicated schedule to travel home to WA and couldn't divert to SJSU

Please know that I will be there in spirit. I love you my brother and I always have. You will forever be in my thoughts! Thank you for shining your light on me.

Charlie and I went to school together from Del Rey Woods to Monterey High.  I am glad to see that he lived a fruitful life and was instrumental in so many lives. It was sad to hear of his passing. RIP friend.

To say Charlie was a special person is an understatement.  I had the enormous pleasure of working with Charlie at SJSU along with the equally remarkable Dr. Paul Brown, and witnessing their daily discussions and debates - mostly about politics.  His dedication to the educator/mentor model was path-blazing, especially his devoted work with the NCAA minority leadership programs. What a man!!

Dr. Charles Whitcomb was a friend, we go back 29 years when he was the NCAA Compliance Officer for SJSU.  I love you and will miss you Charlie.  We had a lot of laughs and since you were here for over 40 years, you had so much wisdom and courage and you gave some to me and for that, thank you Charlie.  RIP big guy, I guess God couldn't stand to have you not be with his band of angels.  

9/1975.  I met saw Charlie at a TR conference. We were in a creative drama session where  his role was "Mellow Yellow."  How perfect!  In Nov., he introduced me to his good friend who has been my husband for 40 years.  We got married in Charlie's backyard.  Charlie called me to apply for a TR faculty position at SJSU.  So many wonderful memories! I have so much gratitude for you.

Charlie was an important mentor to me during the transition from student-athlete to professional.  I appreciate all the opportunities he helped me realize.  I loved working for him in compliance where, two doors down the hallway, I could hear his boisterous laugh on a nearly daily basis.

Charlie hired me in 1988 in a phone interview with Paul Brown and Mae Stadler.We still laugh about how he put me on hold to listen to muzac while they discussed my answers!  We have been friends, colleagues, buddies, confidantes, event planners, ever since.  He was fun, funny, playful, dedicated, high standards, loved people of all color, athletes, his family, SJSU. My mentor gone too soon

I knew Charlie as a teacher, chair of Recreation, a builder of the current Hospitality Management dept., a bright light for minority athletes and NCAA, a foodie, a crazy laugh, a  beyond proud father and grandfather, a respected vice Provost, an ombudsman, and one who listened and heard.  My whole foundation at SJSU has been rocked.  Sleep well my friend.  Your Spartan spirit is with us.

Charlie was a man of integrity, who cared deeply about people and especially students.  He was a warm, compassionate and genuine person who enjoyed life and laughed often.  He made a huge impact on my life as I'm sure he did for others.  He was a very special person and he will always have a place in my heart.  To know Charlie is to love him.

To the Whitcomb family.  My deepest condolences for Charlie's transition.  I am  the son of Kenneth Kim.  I met with Charlie in his office when my father died in 2003.  We caught up and reminisced about his time with my dad.  I only knew Charlie as a child though, etched into my being. I was writing my "memoirs" as a legacy for my grandchildren and a story that included Charles came to mind.  One of my memories had to do with Charles when we were in 7th grade in Seaside California.   We had been classmates since early in elementary school.  I don't have the time to tell that story but it speaks to the type of person Charles was even as a boy.   I will share a story.
