I was saddened to hear about  Riley’s passing.  I first met Riley in 1977.  We both worked as new employees of the recently created Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities.  I came to Nome then on a work assignment and Riley was kind enough to have me stay with him in his trailer.

Our paths crossed many times over the next 14 years.  Riley served as the head of Central Region for the department for many years, including during my four-year tenure as commissioner in the late 1980’s.  I also worked for Riley as a consultant on projects during his time at AIDEA and GCI.  He had numerous accomplishments during his career.  Overseeing construction of the Red Dog Mine road and port and playing a crucial role in attracting FedEx to come to Anchorage are just two that come to mind.

He was one of the most capable and dedicated public servants I’ve had the pleasure to know during my 50 years of working in Alaska.  He possessed a great intellect couple with a genuine decency and caring for people as human beings.  He led by example and taught me what it takes to be a good leader.  Riley would also use humor to keep things light, such as hosting a day-long bus tour of projects in the region with his staff and a life-sized doll named Debby dressed in orange department overalls hanging out in the back of the bus!

I lost touch with Riley the last few years but continued to consider him a good friend.  Strangely I found myself thinking about getting in touch with him literally the day I found out about his death.  I am blessed to have known Riley during my professional life in Alaska.  I want to extend my condolences to his wife, Barbie, and his other family members.  He will not be forgotten.

I was sad to hear of the passing of my dear friend Riley Snell.  I met Riley when he with Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority.  Not only was Riley smart but he was kind and compassionate.  I never recall him saying anything negative and was always looking on the bright sad.  You contagious smile will be missed.

Riley was such a great friend.   Like others, I met Riley when he was deputy director at AIDEA, and he helped support a project we were working.   While the project only lasted 30 years, our friendship went well beyond that.  We often met for a meal and sharing our latest pursuits.   Riley was always positive, insightful, of impeccable character, and a Southern gentleman.  He'll be missed.
