This memorial website was created in the memory of our beloved mom, Susan Cloe. We invite you to add "Susan stories" and photos for us all to enjoy and remember her by.
Susan's last husband was my husband's uncle John Haile Cloe, and from the first time the family met her, she became one of us. She was interesting and kind and really really funny. When we first met, I jokingly warned her that John Haile had already buried 2 wives. Without missing a beat, she replied, "I've buried three husbands." What a great spirit!
To my beautiful Nana,
You were an Angel in life and an Angel watching over us now. Your giving spirit, happy smile and unconditional love for your family was unmatched. I miss you already. I’ll bake Nana cookies in your honor every year.
All my love, Izzy
My Nana lived the definition of self-less. She led with love, and never missed a beat when someone around her needed help, encouragement or a smile. Nana left an everlasting impact on her family and her community, and I truly believe that her legacy will be realized by all of us living as better versions of ourselves. We have Nana to guide us! I will love her always.
Your mom was a special person. She joined our class in the middle of the second grade year. She moved up from the first grade to join us. I remember one of the first things that our teacher Mrs Jones had to teach her was to skip rope. After all:the second grade girls could skip rope. A little effort and your mom could skip rope and was in.
What a ride for the next 11 years in Pullman Schools. Your mom and I did lots of things, we used to date from time to time and in general always had a good time. It was a special time. Then off to WSC (U). For the next 60 years each to our different ways but we all kept in touch and I know we still share lots of good memories. A grand and wonderful woman, your mom.
It was with teary eyes, awe and admiration that I read your mother’s obituary this morning in the ADN. Beautifully written, the obituary describes a remarkable, intelligent, capable woman who led an adventurous and full life. Her sweet demeanor, generous and kind spirt, and quick wit will be my endearing and enduring memories of her.
The last time I saw your mom was on her back deck. You and I had just returned from lunch at SOUTH. Rob and your mom were comfortably seated, enjoying the afternoon sunshine, the sound of the brook, and most of all - each other’s company. They were surrounded by tubs of Mother’s Day rose bushes.
She may have written this classic poem herself. I will feel her smile at mass in the little church in L’etang la Ville where we went together when she visited me in France.
I can hear her chuckle when I revisit the Christmas dinner we shared in Anchorage.
Remembering the twinkle in her eye as she beamed on your wedding day on Wyandotte.
Forever grateful to have met her!

Do not stand at my grave and weep; I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there, I did not die. «
Im writing with a heavy heart and hoping that you can feel our prayers. Our family is near you and your family in thought and I am so sad to learn of your loss. God bless your mother and hope she is embraced by many angels in heaven.
Words are such flimsy things at a time like this. Grief is personal, different for each of us so you will find your own way to deal with it. You mentioned that you were "intertwined" with her...you still are and always will be. That bond of love will never be broken.
Today and yesterday I have been thinking of Susan and the memories are such good ones. She was one of my two bridesmaids and I was her only one when she and Clint married there in Anchorage. There were so many happy afternoon hours in the kitchen of that little house she and Clint had...drinking tea, holding our infants (you and Brad), laughing, wondering what the future held for us. She was such a loving, warm woman I knew she would make a wonderful mom.
I especially cherish the visit I had with her in the home on Rabbit Creek...not too long after Bob died. She graciously became a tour guide for me, showing me all the new places, how Alyeska had grown, taking me to Seward. We reconnected over morning coffee, evening sauvignon blanc.
I am so sad but will replay the memories. My love to you, your brothers and their families.
We were all simply crushed to learn of Susan's death, and we're all mourning the loss of such an amazing and loving lady -- and thinking of you.
I am so sorry about your mom. I know how devoted you were to her. We loved your mom and loved being a part of this last part of her journey. What a sweet, kind, joyful woman she was. Always ready with a smile and a compliment. She will be missed.
Oh my! My heart is so heavy. I had just written a Christmas note to mail to her tomorrow. I so well remember my first motherless day almost 42 years ago-I was 38 and felt like an abandoned baby.
Susan truly was a lady while being an extremely strong woman-a real mentor in my life.
Thank you so much for sharing this sad news. My prayers for Susan will now be prayers of thanksgiving for the gift of a dear friend
I always was terribly impressed with your mother—her warmth, wit and charm—and knew she was a trailblazer but reading her story made me realize what a giant she was in so many ways.
I enjoyed the many wonderful photos. The photo of her jumping on the beach! The picture of her with the sticker on the end of her nose. The old family photo of her with you and your dad. Loved them all.
You were lucky to have her as a mother.
I’m so sorry for the hole in your heart.
Sending much, much love your way.
You had and still have in your heart… an amazing mom! And how you were there for her over the past few and difficult years… you lived a complete circle with her. You were both so lucky…
When I visited your mom was so sharp and animated with those sparkling, twinkling eyes going through photos from years ago. Many of them young and happy and some on the beach! She always gave me wonderful hugs and a blanket of warmth and happiness! She was an awesome lady and will be missed very much we loved her so much I loved seeing her and spending some time with her
She was so awesome and we loved her so much. She lives on in you and in all of those whose lives she touched
She’s now together w your dad and our mom having a gin and tonic
Sorry to hear about Susan. She was such a trailblazer. Thinking of you guys.
From the very first time I met you over 30 years ago until the last time I saw you just recently, you have had my heart. I will miss laughing with you, Susan, but your beautiful smile is with me forever.
So sad, so sad. I just can’t believe it. She is finally at peace. I am thinking of you. Anchorage has lost one of its best.
I’m so sad to hear that news.
I remember your mom as such an upbeat, friendly soul. She exuded positive energy. She will be missed by all who knew her.
My heart goes out to you and the boys. Please know I’m thinking of the family and I send all my love.
I’m so sorry for your loss, especially at this time of the year. But I’m grateful to hear she passed peacefully in her sleep and she will not have to suffer. She was such a sweet loving kind person. My heart goes out to you and your family!
I just wanted to share how sorry I am for the loss of your momhow much I loved her and we spent so much time talking about life. She was such a blessing and I am so sorry… I’ll be keeping your family in my prayers for comfort .
I did miss her greatest struggles in the end but I loved being able to chat with her about everything and receive advice from her, she was wonderful!
I did one of her care givers hair today and I always ask about my past clients there. We had a good time remembering how wonderful was and crying a little together.
I know this holiday will feel less full without such an important loving person, but I hope you and your family have a very blessed Christmas and New Years all the same
I loved my Aunt Susan. I was proud to call her her my Aunt. I enjoyed bragging on her. I will miss her.
It was a beautiful life.
Susan is so much more than my first “real” boss at ARCO (and later KAKM). I always felt like family around her. She taught me much over the years as I watched her navigate her professional and personal life with grace and wit, and yes, even grit—a real steel magnolia. She guided by example and a kind word. And that smile! She could light up a room with that smile and twinkle in her eyes. Rest in peace dear friend. You are missed. Keeping you and your family in my prayers.
I am heartbroken, too! I was going to call her today. I was too late! She is in my prayers every day! Arms around you,
Susan is finally in peace and resting with your dad in heaven. That's for sure!!
It’s always hard to lose our parents but she had a good long life
I will pray for her and for all of you!
I knew Susan for over 40 years and there was no sweeter, more wonderful person!!
We had so hoped this day would never come. I have treasured my friendship with Susan. It is really hard to think she has left this earth. We will remember always her wonderful smile, perpetual and truly amazing grace and kindness. She was a light in my life and I will miss her always. Our hearts are heavy for all of you in this very sad time.
We are just heartbroken to hear of Susan’s passing. Such an extraordinary lady and a huge loss to all. We’ll always remember Susan’s unique and lovely kindness and generosity — and the delightful times we spent with her. She will be greatly missed!
We are feeling your grief and loss as we think about this special lady and all she touched. I first met “Mrs. Andrews,” who would become like a second Mom, when we moved to Ocean View in 1977. She was truly one of the kindest, most sincere and genuinely nice people I have ever met. After my family moved Outside while I was an exchange student in high school, she even offered to let me stay with them so that I could attend my senior year at Service.
When Kim and I moved to Anchorage in 1990, we were blessed to again feel Susan’s warmth and kindness as she welcomed us right back into the family. She was always there for a kind word or some professional advice, and we cherished the many holiday dinners, Easter egg hunts and special occasions at her home. As Trevor and Renée came along, this special “Nana” was also loved by our kids. Our hearts go out to Tom, Christina, Christian, Pher and all of their families. So many wonderful memories; will miss her.
Susan's life here on earth was well lived! I loved how game and engaging she was. We can all take a page out of her book.
Love and prayers to Christina and the whole family. Susan was truly a woman ahead of her time. Her huge smile, warmth, and those twinkly blue eyes..she was always smiling! As a 'career woman' and mother-of-four, she blazed the trail for women in journalism, corporate communications, public media, and non-profit work. And she did it with grace, wit, and charm. What a legacy.
Your mom was an incredible woman of strength, kindness, ingenuity and inspiration to others!
Susan was my guide most of my adult life. I knew I would not always live up to her loving attitude to (almost) everyone she knew, her smile even in the hardest times, her readiness for adventure, her pixy sense of humor, her courage, her competence. She shone at whatever work she was doing. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and you are the proof.
Christian, Christina & entire family I am sorry for your families loss.Igrew up in Oceanview & remember the orange house I think that was yours and your mom was always so kind. I remember the beautiful unique beautiful flowers from STEMS. Loved reading that she was at Arco and her accomplishments.
I will ask friends as I’ve been there 30 yrs Bless you!
I wrote message above and condolences from the entire Partch Family. My mom Serena knew your mom and I remember Christina & Christian from growing up in Oceanview.
Sincerely Jen Partch Briske
