Stu was a wonderful colleague, a dedicated member of Merrill College, and one of the most popular teachers on campus. In meetings, he was calm and judicious. He and Audrey often hosted parties where faculty and undergraduates shared food and swam in their pool. He mesmerized students with images and stories of religion and culture. Stu showed me how to build a community on the campus.
About 30 years ago, I was searching and went to St. Luke’s church where Stu was extremely welcoming and not judgmental. Stu baptized me at the Easter service. This was a major turning point for the better in my life. Stu was a very good friend to me and my husband David, and we cherish all the moments that he shared with us.

Stu was an incredible guide in my life. He taught me that high church liturgy was a beautiful medieval art form, but that it wasn't religion. Don't ever lose sight of that -- we are here to love one another, not cross ourselves at the right time. He brought me back to the church, set a wonderful example of how to be a man (priest! professor! baseball fan! opera fanatic!). I will miss him.
