Shirley (Chandler) Houlihan was born on September 9th,1935 to Michael and Mary (Normandy) Rourke in Lowell Massachusetts, she later moved to Hampton Beach, New Hampshire in 1974. She then resided in Vero Beach, Florida as a "snowbird".
Shirley was the former owner of the Tides Hotel on the corner of H Street until it was permanently lost in a fire. She then purchased a rooming house on Highland Avenue called The Lee Alta which was lovingly dubbed "Shirley's home for wayward boys."
Not many people know this about her but at 17 she was diagnosed with terminal cancer and at the age of 17 was given a radical procedure that made precedence in health journals all along the country. She then became an advocate for women who needed to have the surgery and proved that she and they too, could have a healthy lifestyle even with an  ileostomy.
She took in many down on their luck individuals, including refugees seeking asylum.
She was strikingly beautiful and was crowned Miss Kenneth Toy Company in 1967 which naturally thrilled her children. She would fly in a helicopter to different department stores with Santa Claus and pass out Kenner Toy products like the easy bake oven.
In the mid 80s she became president of the Catholic women's association.
She retired from Novel Iron where she met her current husband Donald Young. They were together for 25 years and married for 9.
She is survived by her eldest daughter Nancy Connors and her husband Mike of Kittery, Maine. Lisa Chandler Forsberg of Vero Beach, Florida and Michael Chandler and wife Cathy of Hampton Beach, New Hampshire.
She had five grandchildren Joshua Chandler and wife Kate, Brianna Comeford, Shana Forsberg-Haight and husband Donnie, Makaley Nichols and Michael Chandler and wife Juliana.
She had four great grandchildren Carter Curll, JJ and Malek Comeford, Stevie Lee Haight and was anxiously awaiting the birth of her fifth, a great granddaughter.
She had two step sons Donald Jr.,  Steven Young and his wife Melody. She was pre-deceased by a stepdaughter Heather Perkins.
Shirley died peacefully in her Hampton, New Hampshire home on September 20th surrounded by many memories and loved ones.
Her services will be held privately
