WE REMEMBER HIM
In the rising of the sun and it’s going down,
We remember him.
In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter,
We remember him.
In the opening of the buds and in the rebirth of spring,
We remember him.
In the blueness of the skies and in the warmth of summer,
We remember him.
In the rustling of the leaves and the beauty of autumn,
We remember him.
In the beginning of the year and when it ends,
We remember him.
When we are weary and in need of strength,
We remember him.
When we are lost and sick of heart,
We remember him.
When we have joys and special celebrations we yearn to share,
We remember him.
So long as we live, he too shall live, for he is part of us,
We remember him.
I know Sam primarily through the Mount Diablo Interpretive Assoc.
(MDIA). In addition, he lived around the corner from me, so I frequently saw him walking in the area, or at Target in downtown Walnut Creek. He was a gentle and unassuming man. However, he was a giant of a person at MDIA. Sam was to MDIA as John Muir was to Sierra Club. RMM
I saw Sam's obituary this morning and was hit with a sudden rush of memories. I took a Lindsay Museum--sponsored trip to Yosemite as a kid, probably 1972 or 1973, that Sam led. I remember his love for the mountains and his vast knowledge. He was one of many influences in my youth that helped foster my own love of the outdoors and led me to work professionally on environmental issues.
We knew Sam as a neighbor, a sage wildlife guide, and a friend. He was a familiar face walking in the area, twirling his cane, smiling brightly as we passed. We shared a love of outdoors and the Old West. We always enjoyed our chats and his top notch tips on rat-trapping. The neighborhood seems oddly quiet without him.
I was very sad when I recently discovered that Sam had passed. As a kid who spent all of his free time between 7th grade and HS graduation at the Lindsay Museum, Sam had a huge influence on my life and career as a biologist. His good nature, knowledge, practical skills, and his ability a teacher were remarkable. I am a better person for having known him.
AS a former Volunteer with MDIA and visitor to Lindsay Museum, knowing him as well as the Sattlers, Mary Bowerman, the Valle Reistras, was such a great impact on my life. Now in Napa hoping to involve myself with local environmental efforts I hope is biography can be written. thank you family and friends.
I just stumble upon this. I remember Sam from working at the Alexander Lindsay Museum in 70’s. Wonderful man to work for.
Sam, Gary, Gerri, Lynn, Rex and many others.
