I met Robert Wheeler once as an applicant to Yale College. He was among the most arrogant, insensitive, and truly despicable people I have ever met. In reading about his life, what stands out the most is that he was a mediocre drone in the Yale system. I would like to thank him for turning me off to Yale. I ultimately went to Stanford which was a much better place. RIP loser!
Bob was a loathsome human being and the world is a better place without him.
Your body rots with the maggots!
Met this fellow once many years ago before I matriculated at Yale. He had a low intellect, superficial personality, and a general banality about him. No great loss to the world with this one gone…
Just learned of his passing. I took both American and Greek History from him in my freshman year at Hawken. He expected excellent work from all of us. I'm a bit stunned at the shallowness and the arrogance of some of the comments here, not unexpected, however. How many times have we been disappointed to meet someone who begins virtually every sentence with, “When I was at Yale..."
I studied Greek History with Bob Wheeler at Hawken School. Great class. I appreciated Mr. Wheeler's push to engage difficult material and encouragement of independent thought. His class was, for me, a bright spot in high school. And over the decades, I've kept returning to the the classics that we read in that class. So I carry that spark with me still. Thank you, Mr. Wheeler.
Recently heard that Bob had passed away. As his secret gay lover of 15 years, I was saddened to hear of his passing. RIP, Bobbie baby.
I knew Bob in the same manner as Vijay, and still miss his soft caresses while his wife was out of town. Bob was a closeted homosexual, and this was common knowledge during his military days. He never came out during his life, which is truly a shame. May his legacy of gentle gay loving live on in all our collective memories.
Miss you so much, Bobby! You proudly flew the rainbow flag long before it became popular. It was a shame our generation was so closeted, but you were a pioneer in your heyday (in your “gayday”).
Greg B.
I’d like to leave a note expressing my condolences. I’m a former Yale undergraduate student who had a very close relationship with “freewheeling” Bob Wheeler. He was a very loving and compassionate person. Sorry to hear of his passing. We definitely spent some good times together.
