I knew Paul as a prince of honor, a psychiatrist who never met a disorder he didn't like enough to treat generously. As an ex-boy scout, I am really impressed to read that Paul was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow.
I miss this friend, terribly. He was someone with whom I worked and had known for 18 years as a colleague and as a supervisor. He had the remarkable ability to engage with and establish rapport with a wide variety of patients. He developed rich relationships with his patients, medical students, friends and colleagues. He was someone in whom you could confide and he would understand.
I had the pleasure and honor of working with Paul for over 25 years. He was the leading light, the voice of calm understanding and someone that students, staff and patients could look to for wisdom, support and guidance. He was able to calm the most agitated patient, while understanding the most complex interpersonal and financial issues of academia and a private hospital. A great loss.
I was a patient of Dr. Arkema's in 2007 as a teenager going through an extremely rough time and I always appreciated his kindness and compassion. I am sorry to hear of his passing. Thank you for what you did for me during a time when I needed kindness and care the most.
