For years I would hear stories about a guy named “Wortis”. “Funniest guy I know. Masterful storyteller.” My husband would retell part of a story and laugh his way through it.
I finally met the legend when he worked at Thorny Lea over the summer and helped Pete out with the kids camps. What a memorable season. Both my kids participated and got a chance to know Mike. His obituary captured him perfectly. He was larger than life. A golf pro in Ferragamo’s. Now not only did my husband have stories, but the kids too. Mike even gave my son the nickname we use today. Iceman. Mike attached the name after watching Jack go through cups of ice chips all summer. We made a custom head over for him last Christmas so he will continue to carry Mike’s spirit with him on the golf course.
My thought and prayers to his family. He was a special man.
So many life lessons came with Mike’s golf lessons. My son said he’ll never forget Mike’s expressions like: “A good mechanic never blames his tools.” The one I’ll remember most was what he used to tell my son as he was lining up for his swing. He’d tell him, “Set sail.” What a life. So many stories. He will be deeply, deeply missed and never forgotten. Set sail, Mike. Set sail.
