John was a cherished friend and colleague for two decades. I could describe his intellectual gifts and humanitarian passions but something else comes to mind. He had a passion for older VW vans, owning two. While John was driving down busy Tudor Avenue in Anchorage one day his VW van spontaneously combusted and burned to ashes. John survived and moved on - a survivor of many adventures.
