It was the first meeting, four or five of us in John Dizikes's office preparing for our orals in U.S.History, and John looked at us and said, "I'm not interested in what you don't know. I'm interested in what you do know."

“Good students make good teachers.” John always gave credit to his students for their accomplishments. And he always had good questions, nurturing our creativity and curiosity. His classroom was a sanctuary for learning. John and Ann made the Cowell Provost House a place of friendship and joy. I’m forever grateful.

John never lauded over people his experience or knowledge, he preferred the company of friends, equals, and that is how I always felt he treated me. It was an honor to assist him in teaching the Cowell Core Course, even as I had no idea what I was doing, he nurtured my interests. He was the embodiment of "Fiat Lux" and all the wonder that UCSC offered. Thank you. Blessed Be John Dizikes!

I was merely one of hundreds, nay thousands of students. Yet John and Ann made me feel special, and provided a sense of security and home-away-from-home for so many of us. I learned so much from them about hospitality and inclusiveness; about not only scholarship but the opportunities to learn from all of the amazing people who cross our paths. I am forever grateful.

I miss John during his occasional trip to the market.  During these brief encounters we shared memories of a time enrollment at UCSC needed diversification reflecting our state population. I am greatful for the times he stepped up when requested to welcome students, parents, education representatives as a scholar, friend, mentor. I/we will miss your friendly smile and warm welcome words.

I'll never forget how he stopped at my desk and when handing me back my paper, excitedly said, "This is so well-written!" With that big smile on his face. Like he was fortunate to have experienced it. Like I did him a favor. His encouragement  helped me pursue a journalism career.  He touched so many lives in such a positive way.
