John, you were so much fun to work with at Henrico schools. You were an excellent photographer, and an even better friend. You showed up at my Mom's visitation, when so many of my "friends" couldn't be bothered. That was so special. When you talked about your wife and Kim, I could hear the love and pride in your voice. I know they miss you terribly.

I'm saddened to hear this news. John was a friend and made our work day more pleasant, just being himself. My life has been richer because you were a part of it. Rest in peace. Heartfelt sympathy to your family.  CarolLincks, BMS

John, you were a veritable fountain of information on those track and field photo assignments where I appreciated your guidance because you knew who was story of the day. Your gentlemanly easy-going manner will be missed by your fellow photographer friends here at the Times-Dispatch Photo Department. Joe Mahoney

Great educator that was always fair with his students. Has touched many people with his straight forward talk and rational approach to problems in public education. You will be missed. Thank you for the time and efforts you showed me during the most pivotal years of my development.

I've known Mr. Irby for about 32 years.  He was always a kind, caring man.  Such a privilege to have worked with him.  His smile will be missed.

Lizzie and I were so saddened to hear of Mr. Irby's passing.  He followed and photographed Lizzie throughout her high school and even college pole vaulting career, and was always such a supportive and a kind gentleman.  We adored him and he will always be remembered most fondly! Our warm wishes, thoughts and prayers to your family.

How I loved John Irby. He had this infectious joy about him that everyone witnessed everytime he entered a school or walked on an athletic field. His passion for sports, school photography and young people was a gift that he gladly shared on a daily basis when I had the good fortune as the yearbook adviser to meet him at Deep Run. I will miss him terribly. God bless you and keep you, John.
