My mom, Barbara, was Ron’s older sister by 12 years.
I was 4-years-old and my brother, Mark, was a year younger when we attended Ron and Jan’s impressive wedding in 1955. I remember our mom somehow found matching, pink jackets for us to wear at the occasion.
Apparently pink was one of her preferred colors and she even ended up talking our dad, Cecil, into purchasing a pink Lincoln around 1959.
For some reason our family used to refer to the recently married couple as Aunt Ron and Uncle Jan.
There was always a lot of teasing and joking going on in our family get-togethers.
It seemed like the adults were constantly making smart ass comments and cracking each other up. I especially remember Aunt Ron, Uncle Jan, and my dad trading one-liners and witty observations back and forth.
Uncle Jan was always up for a verbal sparring match with the boys.
I always thought Aunt Jan looked like a movie star and Uncle Ron could be her handsome co-star. They made a good-looking couple.
At first our grandparents, Pop and Mumu, lived in their house in Alamo and Ron and Jan had a home in Danville. However, they later bought the Alamo residence and kept it in the family.
I always liked that house and yard and the neighborhood. I remember being there at times for Thanksgiving and maybe Christmas. In those days people were still allowed to burn their Autumn leaves and I remember that smell as a backdrop.
Aunt Jan was a great cook and I recall a variety of memorable meals.
My older sister, Susie, my older brother, Steve—plus Mark and I—used to have a lot of fun at the Alamo home. I remember when Danny was still an only child and they got a Border Collie they named Lassie. She would chase us around like we were two-legged sheep as long as we could keep going.
Steve and his wife, Linda, also bought a home in Alamo, so they got to hang out with Uncle Jan and Aunt Ron on a regular basis.
Yea, everybody loved and appreciated Jan and she will be sorely missed.
