Herschel and my husband worked together for the Seaside Police Department for 15 years.  He took Vern under his wing and was always a kind mentor.  In later years I worked for Herschel when he was Chief of Del Rey Oaks PD.  Vern left us last year on New Years Eve.  I'm sure they'll find each other and tell war stories to anyone who will listen.
