One of the positive aspects of advancing age is the accumulation of opportunities, often in unplanned or unexpected circumstances, to meet people who wind up making a real difference in your life. Harry Burt was one of those people for me. We met five years ago when we were randomly seated next to each other one Sunday evening at Joe's Inn, a well known eatery in Richmond's Fan district. Little did I know that, from that chance meeting, I'd be treated to five years of Harry's strength, hope, experience and wisdom. By example he taught me so much about the values of an inquiring faith, steadfastness of purpose and a curious, open mind. He's one of my heroes and I will miss him.
Ages ago, my Nancy and I joined the Falls Church. We were embraced by an eclectic, extraordinary group of Christians who called themselves “Housechurch”. Chief amongst these were a smiling Harry and his gracious wife, Eleanor. As you will hear from many, Harry literally stood as a quiet beacon and mentor in Christian study, as a role model, and as a friend. I thank God that I knew him!
