This memorial website was created in the memory of Prof. Dr. H. Joachim Maitre, 85, born on November 22nd, 1934 and passed away on August 22nd, 2020.
The "Good Doctor" was just that to me at McGill in the late 60's.
A music lover, philosopher and football fan.
He told me, in his assuredly right of centre way: " People will tell you that there are two sides to every case, but what they forget is that one is right and one is wrong."
Maitre was my professor at BU years ago. He was very kind and generous with his time. Any time I stopped by his office, he made sure I left with something to read. I couldn't collect my final research paper because I had to fly out of Boston. Maitre was kind enough to mail it to me after he marked it. I don't know any other professor who would have gone through the trouble. RIP Maitre.
Dean Maitre made administrative decidsons quickly, unusual in academia. I was assistant editor
of The Chronicle of Higher Education in the late sixties and covered most of the more interesting
student protests in this country and abroad. He produced lightning decisions.

I met Hans-Joachim for the first time as a sixteen-year-old at McGill University. He once told me at an event in Montreal’s Goethe Haus to avoid, where possible, the word “interessant.“ Sixty years later, that brief comment brought me back to Heidegger’s “Was heißt Denken?“ A profound thinker, independent, tough, and remarkably brave, above all, a good friend.
