Of all the people in my lifetime, and I am almost 80 years old, I learned the most from Gary Holthaus.
Not only did I learn how to live my best life and how to deal with disappointments, but to appreciate 12th Century Chinese poets.
As a member of our Anchorage Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, I encountered Gary once a week from 2014 through 2017 when he left the state. Gary was a man of great wisdom. I have several of his books and enjoy taking a few moments to read from them and remember Gary. He had settled into being a comfortable secular humanist atheist but recognized that that was not for all.
He was what I think of as an ideal minister. A minister has a position that requires setting priorities and guiding without being authoritarian for individuals and for the whole congregation. Gary had mastered that. He was accepting, guiding, never evangelical, and always working toward the betterment of individuals and our world. Thank you, Gary.
