Ethan was my dearest and oldest friend.
For many years we had lunch together nearly every day at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
Ethan was truly a man for all seasons. I particularly enjoyed our discussions of politics, religion, philosophy, and technical issues because he always had such brilliant insights. His dispassionate yet steadfast application of logic and rationality was truly enlightening and refreshing. Also, he was always able to take the “longer view”, often providing me solace for my daily life
His technical expertise was well regarded, and he worked on some of the most interesting technical challenges at the Laboratory.
Ethan also shared aspects of his military service, providing me insights that I would otherwise never have had.
Do I remember now the details of our discussions? No; I remember the joy of the experience.
