When I was born, Elinor was 13 years old—the perfect age to be my big sister. For the first six years of my life, she stepped in as my surrogate mother while my mother did her best to support the family as a practical nurse—working the night shift. Mom did her best, and so did Dad. Most of all, I remember Elinor’s kindness, the simple things she taught me, like walking up stairs, and the songs she sang to me. My favorite was, “Give me land, lots of land under starry skies above, don’t fence me in.” Elinor, dear sister, you are no longer fenced in. May you enjoy the freedom your spacious soul has always desired.
