Elaine Osband Lewis was 89 years old when she passed away on April 24, 2022. She was born in Rochester, New York, to David and Dena Osband and was editor of the 1950 Rochester East High School yearbook. Elaine earned a BA from Smith College in 1954 and then joined IBM to program computers using punch cards, like the women in the movie “Hidden Figures”. In 1955 she married Eliot Robinson.
Elaine lived for almost 40 years in Hingham, Massachusetts where she was a member of a women’s bridge club, the Quincy Beth Israel Synagogue Sisterhood, and enjoyed swimming, boating, fishing, gardening, baking, knitting, needlepoint, and entertaining. She was known for cookie jars filled with mouthwatering home-baked cookies and bars. Elaine delighted in being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
In 1999, Elaine married John “Red” Lewis, Jr. after relocating to Mountain Brook, Alabama, where she was a consummate baker, hostess, and gardener. She enjoyed traveling with Red, her JCC Swim Babes exercise group, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, and the Birmingham Museum of Art. Elaine served one term as president of the New Horizons at UAB
Elaine recently moved to Nashua, New Hampshire, to be closer to her immediate family. She is survived by her son Douglas, daughter-in-law Birgit, daughter Pam, son-in-law Fred, grandchildren Eric, Marc, Tara, and Grant, two great-grand children, brother-in-law William, sister-in-law Shirley, many nephews, nieces, and Red’s daughters Anne, Kate, and Lizy.
Because of the crucial cutting-edge support she received as her vision worsened, in lieu of flowers, we ask donations be made to the UAB Birmingham Low Vision Fund.
Not sure if you'll remember me. Formerly Nanci Wasserman. I wanted to let you know that I will never forget the kindness of your mother who was very close to my mother Rhoda while I was growing up. We spent many wonderful afternoons and weekends at your mother's house in Hingham and she was always extremely kind to me. She may be gone but her lovely memory lives on in my thoughts.
