Dorothy Ann Coykendall (Chesapeake), 82, passed away February 17th, 2018. Born in Marion, Ohio August 2nd, 1935, Dorothy and her family relocated to Chesapeake, Virginia in 1978.
As a homemaker, she kept very busy with her children, grandchildren, and local Salvation Army Home League Women’s Group until her health began to decline. She and her beloved late husband, Ray, were members of Temple Baptist Church in Chesapeake prior to both moving into Beacon Shores Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Shortly thereafter, and after 61 years of marriage, she lost her devoted husband. Although missing him dearly, Dorothy demonstrated great strength, keeping her spirit and sense of humor, showing kindness and love to everyone she met. At Beacon Shores, she was known for her feisty yet fun nature. She made many friends and was loved by the staff. Much of her time was spent crocheting lap blankets and gifts for others, coloring, working on her word-find books, playing bingo, and making crafts in the activities room with her fellow residents. Visitors to her room were greeted with balls and balls of yarn, and her artwork hanging on the walls.
Left to cherish her memory are her 2 children, Marcia Boomer and Ray A. Coykendall, 4 grandchildren, Chris, Miles, Ashlynn, and Freddie, and a host of other cousins, nephews, nieces, family, and friends. Dorothy was predeceased by her mother, Luella Grace Jones.
Dorothy’s funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Thursday, February 22nd, at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 East Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk, VA. Her family will receive friends there on Wednesday from 6 to 8 pm. A reception for family and friends will be held following the service on Thursday, also at Woodlawn.
Dorothy’s family would like to thank everyone for their calls, messages, and prayers during her illness. They would also like to extend a special thank you to those that provided extra loving care for Dorothy after Ray's death and during her recent illness. Your support and kindness have been a great blessing. Finally, they would like to recognize the CCU staff at Sentara Virginia Beach General hospital for the heartfelt compassion and care provided to Dorothy and her family prior to her passing.

My deepest sympathies for the loss of your mother and grandmother.
