On July 15, this amazing woman got her wings. What a life devoted to serving the needs of others, helping the community and State. From a Sunday School teacher to 21 yrs on the SLZ School Board including the in between time as President of the PTA. All the years of involvement and support for Little League and Bobby Sox to Brownies, Cub Scouts, Boy & Girl Scouts, and Bike Rodeo’s.
Then there are years dedicated to social change with NOW, National Women’s Political Caucus, the Gray Panthers, and Senior Legislature. She initiated the first “Recognition of Women’s History Month” in SLZ high schools.
How about the many years looking out for the health and safety of our environment and community: Hayward Area Shoreline Planning Agency, HARD and the Shoreline Interpretive Center, the Bay Trail, the founder of domestic violence organization which now is Ruby’s Place,
the Citizens Advisory Committee to the Sheriff, Alameda Co. Consumer Affairs Commission and Alameda Co. Emergency Medical Care Committee (initiator of the first “911” pamphlet).
Oh, and she’s not done! You’re probably asking how one person could do so much. As many people have described her as remarkable and a force, she keeps going.
Her Lutheran faith was always a priority and fueled her force supporting Church Women United of the Eden Area. She made sure the libraries were represented as many years involved as the president of the Friends of the SLZ Library. Taking care of the senior meals with the Fairmont Hospital Campus Service League.
History was important as her involvement with the Hayward Historical Society and saving the barn as president of San Lorenzo Heritage Society.
(I’m hope I got everything but I’m sure I missed something, so feel free to remind me).
All in all, this amazing woman was the most supportive, loving, accepting and giving MOM!
You will be missed

I have only praise and admiration of this amazing woman, Betty Moose.  She helped us to found our own chapter of the NWPC and helped to support wonderful women for public office when there were few or none—she did it to support education, our environment and social justice and to create role models for young people that we should change our world for the better. Betty did! DelaineEastin

Betty Moose was strong-willed, persistent, and dedicated to the causes she believed in.  Fiercely protective of her beloved San Lorenzo Village and Alameda County, she showed up and made a difference.  At times unconventional, but always fighting for schools, the library, elder rights, historical buildings and many other causes.  Thank you for all you did!   Barb & Deb Tully-French

I wasn't lucky enough to know Betty, although I was charmed by her when we did meet, but I was lucky enough to know her daughter Claudia. I know Betty was a remarkable woman and the proof of that is not only in her civic accomplishments but in Claudia, a remarkable woman in her own right, a smart, resilient, caring, productive and funny human who has enriched many lives.

I served on the San Lorenzo School Board with Betty from 1983-1996. Betty was a remarkable community leader, organizer and advocate who rally people around different causes. She spoke truth to power and often was the lone dissenting vote on the board, much to the chagrin of fellow board members and or school administrators. Even facing overwhelming odds, she was forever optimistic.
