I met Steven at Stanford where we were both visiting professors in 1991. I found him to be one of the kindest and most capable people that I have ever known. He was a friend to me and was always a wise counselor and consoler. He wore his considerable talents and scholarly achievements with utmost modesty. I miss him a great deal.
