Candle lit  by Karen Rudolph on June 27th, 2018

Betty Jo Rudolph passed peacefully on Saturday, June 16, at the age of 97, with her family at her side.

Born to Josephine Jones Fry and James Fry in Anaconda, Montana on December 14, 1920, Betty entered the world the year women won the right to vote in America. Her family soon moved to Tacoma, Washington, where she grew up.

She worked as draftsman building baby flattops in the Todd shipyards of Tacoma during World War II and was a member of the Teamsters Union. She met Onslow “Rudy” Rudolph, a Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers, at Fort Lewis army base. Betty put herself through college at the University of Puget Sound.  After marrying Rudy, they moved to California and attended San Jose State University.  Betty earned a teaching credential which she put to use in the Alum Rock district of San Jose.

Betty raised three children— John, Karen and Allen— each of whom raised families in the Bay Area. She kept her quick sense of humor to the end, which was always appreciated, even when it manifested in loud jokes in quiet restaurants. Her sweet tooth was legendary; she never met a box of See’s Candy she didn’t like.

Betty joined Christ Church in 1958 and was a Bell Ringer and member of the Altar Guild. She taught Sunday School and was especially proud to have been on the committee that commissioned the stained glass windows in the sanctuary. She was also on the auxiliaries of the San Francisco Symphony and the Children’s Health Council and was a dedicated member of P.E.O., which offers scholarships to women.

She is preceded in death by her son John and is survived by her children Allen and Karen, daughter-in-law Pamela Curtis, grandchildren Christiana, Alex, Elise, Chloe, Arthur and Jacob, and great-grandchild Oliver, whose presence was the quickest way to conjure up Betty’s beautiful smile.

A service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Los Altos at 10 a.m. on June 30, 2018.

The family requests that donations be made to Second Harvest Food Bank or to the Audubon Society in lieu of flowers.
