While saddened to hear the news of Dan’s passing, my memories linger. Dan Goodenough and I began a mentor-student relationship when I joined the Anatomy Department in January of 1972, shortly after he became an Assistant Professor. As is well reflected in the testimonials recognizing Dan’s accomplishments and selfless persona, Dan became much more than PhD student mentor setting the stage for a career as a cell biologist-he gave me life lessons by example that I would only fully come to appreciate at much later. 1972 and the years after were the heydays of cell biology in general but for those with a piquant interest in membrane biology, Dan was the man who inspired and contextualized science for me in what would become a rite of passage for my career and life goals. One-on-one weekly 2 hour readings course for a semester blurred all student professor boundaries as he brought the joy of shared learning into focus distinct from what was the status quo at that time. No better example could be drawn from the playbook of this experience than the hours we spent mastering “The Balzer’s” freeze fracture machine from which platinum replicas of the highest quality would reveal the secrets of membrane organization resulting in my thesis in June of 1975. From then on, Dan became for me a role model for balancing work and family and always being available for whatever the next life crisis was that he would unconditionally be prepared to listen to and proffer advice. As a role model for teaching for an upcoming faculty member in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, there was no better tag team in the Department than the likes of Dan and Elio Raviola. My condolences to Carol, Ursula, and other family members whose loss is best recognized in knowing that Dan was driven by the good for all, something we can only hope for in the troubled world he has left behind but contributed so much to for those of us privileged to have known him.
