The world is a poorer place since the loss of your father. Pass my good wishes to Steve

He was chairman of my PhD committee at NPS. Although he was not a fan of administration, his control and scheduling of my committee made sure that no bureaucratic or administrative hurdles impeded my progress. I have always appreciated his advice and counsel both during my MS and PhD programs. His teaching skills were impressive and his tests challenging. This allowed his better students to separate themselves from the group. I think it was his way of emphasizing quality and thoroughness in his students' studies. I will always feel indebted to him for his assistance during one of the more challenging times in my life.

Thank you so much of thinking of us to send the obituary of your father.  I was so saddened to learn of his passing.  My husband Pat often spoke of him as one of his favorite cousins.  He was a great man and had so many accomplishments during his lifetime and yet remained so humble and "laid back."  I remember when he brought you boys here one summer and I took you all to see "The Blues Brothers" because my oldest son Patrick had seen it and thought you would enjoy it.  I'll never forget my guilt feelings when you told your dad I had taken you to a "R" rated movie.  I had no idea it had that rating.  Actually, that movie would probably have a "G "rating with today's standards.

I had not heard from your dad last Christmas so I had hoped nothing was wrong.  I did know he was several years older than my husband though.  I have some great memories when we visited him in Carmel and he showed us such a good time taking us to Pebble Beach, driving us around the area, and going to the beach where we built a fire.  Those were wonderful times and, of course, we loved Carmel, Monterrey, and the area.

Please give your brothers our condolences.  I know you will miss him terribly as you boys were his life, as you must know.  Our best to all of you.  I hope things are going well and that the new year will be a good one for all of you.

With love,
Clara Casey

My deepest condolences to you guys, Chris, Steve and Darren. Your dad was very kind to me. A great coach. Took us to A´s baseball games in the station wagon back in the day if I do recall.

I first met "Dr Read" when he was one of my professors at NPS in 1981. When I returned to NPS later in my Navy career in 1991 as an instructor, I had an office beside "Bob" and found out we were fellow Ohio State alums. A great friendship ensued as we played golf together and watched many, many Ohio State football games together (he then became "Buckeye Bob") at sports bars and at our homes. He shared many great stories of his time growing up in Columbus and of Ohio State football history. Bob had a great sense of humor and an easy laugh. Becky and I will miss Bob tremendously and always think of him on Ohio State football game days.
