The Rt. Rev. G. Richard Millard passed away peacefully at his residence at The Sequoias in Portola Valley on June 15th, 2018, at the age of 103.  He was the retired Suffragan Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of California.
Dick Millard was born into a railroad family in Siskiyou County, California.  He graduated from  UC Berkeley - where he met his future wife, Mary Louise Gessling - and the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Bishop Millard served as rector of St. James Church in Danbury, Connecticut and Christ Church in Alameda, California.  He was elected Suffragan (assistant) Bishop of the Diocese of California in 1960.  This was a period of rapid growth, and he was instrumental in planting  a number of new parishes in the Diocese. He later served as Bishop of the Convocation of  American Episcopal Churches in Europe.  
In 1965, he marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  in Selma, Alabama. 
He also played a role in the  the creation of the Berkeley Student Cooperative,  which today houses over a thousand students every semester.
Bishop Millard was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Mary Louise, and  his elder son George.  He is survived by a daughter,  Martha Millard Jones  of Scotts Valley,  a son, Joseph Millard of Riverside, two grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. 
There will be a celebration of Bishop Millard's life during the 11 o'clock Sunday service at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco on September 30th 2018.
