One year ago, my sister became so desperate that she took her own life. I was deeply stricken with grief that as her brother and a physician, I never saw it coming (she hid her pain so well). There was so much left unsaid, and I could do nothing to help her. While I'll never fully understand the sense of hopelessness she must have felt and the suffering she must have endured, I've come to believe that depression and anxiety can be prevented by an outward expression of love for our children every single day, which is what I am doing for my daughter, so that she will grow up knowing someone loves her unconditionally and will always be there for her. I hope that Kyle knows that she loved him dearly. And I hope that anyone going through similar circumstances can find help from family, friends, or professionals before it is too late. We should all remember to be positive and to laugh, have fun, celebrate, and spend time with family and friends as often as possible.
