So sorry to hear of John's passing.  I was lucky to have John as my first ever boss.  He was kind and patient with the many mistakes I made, sometimes making a joke out of my errors.  But always patient and understanding.  Without John I am sure I would not have had the basis to go onto to do the work I have.
