Joe was my lifelong professional inspiration, in my medical practice life and as someone dedicated to an innovative and better pracitce model.Current generations of professionals of recent versions of HCHP and HPHC--Harvard Vanguard and Atrius Health--are unfortunately unaware of the origin and the originator of this unique structure of care and Joe's vital role establishing & leading it
Joe was an innovator as well as a superb clinician, for some time my personal doctor. A "doc," as those of us in the profession regard such people. We worked together for some years, beginning in 1968, part of the original staff of HCHP. Joe was a visionary, committed to a personal and humane version of healthcare much needed, little encountered. He left his mark. We will miss you, Joe.
I remember the day Dr. Dorsey held a meeting in April, 1970 at which Bob Biblo was introduced as the new C.E.O of HCHP. I knew very little about HMOs at the time. The meeting had a bit of solemnity at what was to become a leader in health care management. Part of the story included Joe Dorsey almost running to a meeting or seeing a patient. His patients loved him. He was special.
