Richard Henry Gatley III
  • 85 years old

Richard "Dick" Gatley III was born September 16, 1930 in San Francisco, California to Richard Henry Gatley Jr. and Sarah Isabel Hammerson both of San Francisco, California. Richard Henry Gatley Sr. (Dick’s grandfather) immigrated to San Francisco in 1888 from Cornwall, England. Dick grew up in and around the San Francisco Bay Area from Burlingame and San Mateo to Los Gatos and the Santa Cruz mountains.

Dick is survived by his wife of 59 years, Carol Joyce Morrison Gatley, his sister Isabel Marie “Cis” Starn, three (3) children, Christopher James (Cathy), Brian Richard (Elizabeth), Karen Marie Tejeda (Eric), and eleven (11) grandchildren.

Dick and Carol were married March 2, 1957 in San Francisco and continued to reside and raise their children in the San Francisco Bay Area for 36 years. Lake Tahoe, Monterey, and Carmel were favorite destinations for vacations and family gatherings.

In 1992, Dick discovered Vandervert Ranch just south of Sunriver, Oregon through his dear friend Mick Humphreys and began the construction of their home and primary family gathering place from 1993 - 2008. In 2008, Dick and Carol moved to Bend, OR for greater access to the community they love.

A real estate developer by profession, Dick’s greatest passion was gathering with his family. The family continues to gather in Carmel Valley, California where Dick and Carol spent their honeymoon and now where children and grandchildren continue to meet for reunions, weddings, and family gatherings.

Dick Gatley will best be remembered by his passion for family, his faith in Jesus Christ, his impeccable integrity, and his desire to provide for others. “You could just see his incredible love for Carol” through the years of recovery from the accident, said one of his closest friends.

While very active and healthy in his later years, congestive heart failure continued to take it’s toll until his eventual death on February 6, 2016.

Dick leaves a hole, but a very warm place in our hearts.

A celebration and memorial service will be held Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 11 am at Sanctuary Bible Church, 8340 Carmel Valley Road, Carmel, CA 93923

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Family Research Council or Hillsdale College
