Howard was a wonderful gentleman and friend and a loyal legionnaire.
We all will miss him.
Howard and I started at Washington High School in Fremont in 1969/70; he as a teacher and I as a student. I had another teacher for Freshman Geography but, fortunately for me, we met again almost 40 years later as volunteers at the Brentwood Library. What a wonderful and interesting man! I am honored to have called Howard my friend and will miss his gentle spirit and twinkle in his eye.
Dad, You will be forever in my heart. I will miss you.
About 15 years ago, at a Canadian Legion Memorial Day Service at Greenlawn Cemetery in Colma, Howard saw my daughters sitting on the grass in matching Irish sweaters listening to their dad play a lament on the bagpipes. It was one of the few times I had both girls undivided attention. His photo of them still graces my desk at work. He knew it was a precious moment!
Oh, and one more thing! Howard and I were talking about being teachers some time back. I told him I needed help with my high school diploma program at the Alameda County jail in the form of a part-time high school diploma instructor. He willingly took up the challenge and taught a variety of subject (math was a biggie) to inmates for a couple years! He always dressed very smart!
Cyril "Howard" Cavil was an effective sparkplug for the Mountain Area Literacy Council in Oakhurst. He was a great story teller, spokesman, and fundraiser for our all volunteer adult literacy program. We greatly missed him when he left Oakhurst. I was fortunate to be his friend.

Howard was a wonderful friend of the family, he & my late Grandfather Raymond were good friends, now they're together again in heaven. He was a great gentleman, a very nice man, & I was glad to see him when he visited. I will cherish his memory.
