I have not been in touch, but I am so sad to hear of her death. I remember a beautiful young woman with the kindest smile. I wished I had her red hair. Thinking of Alexa and family. Hope to see Alexa again one of these days.

Dear Chesley,
Thank you for what you left here.  You seemed to see things so clearly.  You could explain beautiful and painful ideas and notice the things that go unnoticed.  You made much more than a mark on the lives of so many people and animals. ms

Florence, Italy. Summer of 1990. You told me to read the part about limps in Salinger's Franny & Zooey. Here's what it said: "Cleverness was my permanent affliction, my wooden leg, and that it was in the worst possible taste to draw the group’s attention to it. As one limping man to another, old Zooey, let’s be courteous and kind to each other." RIP CE, the world is less without you in it.
