Goodbye Charlie, father, son, brother, uncle, raconteur, style-setter and scholar of the streets.
--John Philp, Charlie's brother-in-law
My big brother. He was funny, smart and kind. He was a proud, proud father and a devoted son with many lifelong friends. He had impeccable style and great taste in books, movies and music that I always admired.I thought he would teach my kids about music the way he taught me.I thought we had years and years ahead of us. I will miss him more than I can say. We all will.
Charlie was my barber, but once a month for those 30 minutes he felt like the best of friends. Seeing Charlie was one of my favorite rituals. He always had a story, a wisecrack, a recommendation for a song I just had to hear. Every month for 5 years I saw him at Main Street Barber. I wasn’t just there for a cut; I was there to see Charlie. I will miss him terribly.
Charlie would cut my hair at the Gentlemen’s Quarters in Old Town Alexandria. We’d talk about punk rock and share new music. There for me during some rough times. One of the most authentic people I’ve ever met. We were excited to go see some concerts together in Richmond this year but I’ll just have to catch to see him on the flip-side. I’m going to miss you a lot Charlie.
Charlie was my best friend for almost 50 years going back to our days at HS of A&D in NYC. After he moved to Richmond we'd still remain in contact on at least once a week. I wish I could call him and every day since he passed. Charlie, ol' pal, I miss you, I love you and i'll always remember your laugh, your humor and our friendship.
