It is with deep sadness to announce the passing of James Franklin Ross, also known as “Diamond Jim.” Dad was a staple in his community and a gentleman.

Jim passed away after a respiratory battle with pneumonia that may have been onset by CoVid-19 at the age of 73. He was born in Detroit, Michigan to Esther Charlotte Ross (Zalewski) and Alvin Thomas Ross and was the eldest of four children. He was predeceased by his brother Lawrence (Larry) and his sister Tammy.

They lived in the small town of Hamtramck, MI until 1959. They moved to Clearwater, FL after Alvin went to visit a relative and said he was “done with the snow.” This is where Jim grew up, found his love of living close to the water and became a fanatic of the Miami Dolphins. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the Navy which stationed him across the U.S. in San Diego, CA.  He served in Vietnam alongside the Marine Corps as a Medic., received two medals and obtained certifications as a Hospitalman. He was honorably discharged after completing his four years of service and two years of reserves in 1972. He moved to San Francisco, CA and married in 1975 where his only daughter was born in 1980. After divorcing and a few memorable years in Clearlake, he moved to San Jose in 1990 and settled there the remainder of his life.

Jim was a bartender for 27+ years before he found his love in the profession of being a poker dealer in 2000. He enjoyed his tenure at Garden City and the M8trix. On his spare time, he loved playing poker, following sport teams, doing his rounds, listening/dancing to music, and drives to Santa Cruz/Capitola. He wore Hawaiian shirts to dress up and prided himself on having a different one for every occasion. He would say, “the louder the better” even though he was a shy guy and only opened up after a couple Jim Beams and water.

His keen organization, record keeping, preparedness and penmanship were to be admired. For these reasons, many friends trusted him, teased him, and enjoyed joining his Office pools. He looked forward to seeing their faces when they won and handing them the prize. Above all, he had a good sense of humor, a sweet heart, and was especially proud of his daughter.  They enjoyed each other’s company as they had much in common.

Jim is survived by his daughter Janis Charlotte Ross..

Jim was one of a kind. He will be missed by all that knew him but are grateful for the memories they were lucky enough to have created with him. May he now rest in peace.

Celebration of life TBD. Please RSVP http://evite.me/DvXygFGkt7
