I met Dr. Michaels in 1986 when I was assigned to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center as a paramedic intern. As a new paramedic, it was incredibly intimidating working in such a high volume trauma center. Dr. Michaels quickly made me feel at ease and became one of the most incredible people I ever had the pleasure of working and learning under.

After promotion,I had to serve 2000-2001 at BET/EMS as BLS coordinator.Everybody jokingly called this "Purgatory".Not knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised that Michaels's leadership provided a comfortable atmosphere to contribute to the EMS-team as a whole, any way I could.I will miss your kind ways.PS- I won't hold it against you for being a Bears fan.I liked Ditka.Ninerfan.

I served with Dr. Michaels in SJFD.  Cheerful, funny, kind, humble, quick witted, a tireless advocate, and a life saver - literally.  After the Indonesian Tsunami in 2004, he made sure that kilos of expired (but good) antibiotics and other meds made it to people literally dying of basic infections.  Who knows how many were spared by his advocacy. He was a friend and an example.  An honor.

I really nice man, and an excellent medical director. A pleasure to work with and to just be around.

I met Howie while I was EMS medical director for Alameda County and he was same for Oakland Fire. Without disparaging anyone, Howie had many challenges, politically and fiscally, in taking care of the teaching and quality activities for the EMT and paramedic firefighters. He always maintained a smile regardless of the obstacle. Howie had the rare gift of truly caring about others.

Where do I start? Met the good doctor when he was the SJFD medical director.  Doc Michaels and I shared many giggles in our words with friends marathons.  I teased him about him losing all of the time.  I would say, didn't you get all that "extra" schooling?  A lovely human being. I will miss you dearly. Thank you for being my friend.

I worked with Dr. Michael when he was the SJFD medical director.  He was a super guy.  Down to earth and on our side.  He was always smiling.  One time my engine crew did a little something, let's say not by the book, but in the patient's best interest.  We had to meet with Dr. Michael.  He told us not to do it again. but off the book, good job.  Heck of a man.  Rest in Peace.
