My brother and I were raised by Harold’s parents - they raised 27 boys and 13 girls – we were all Welfare children. I was there when Harold was a Korean POW and when he finally came home. The entire town came out for a huge celebration of his release back to freedom. I was there when he met and married Mable and when his children were born. I was there the many times when he had to go back into the VA hospital for the Malaria fever he was infected with as a POW. And I was there to hear some of the stories he hesitated to tell of his treatment as a POW. And so, I have a confession to make – I NEVER , ever comprehended the atrocities he endured from the Chinese & Koreans. I recently read a book, “A Moment In Time”, a Korean POW Survivor’s Story by William W. Smith. The stories in the book mirrored the stories that Harold told. And I cried for Harold and for all of his fellow POW’s.
As a note, while researching my own Ancestry, I found out that Harold is my 5th cousin, once removed!! Who would have ever thought that we was raised by family!
So, gentle giant of a man, Rest In Pease cousin!
