I am looking at a picture of Gerry and Colleen's family, which was sent to me by them the Christmas of 1969. I had previously noted in LinkedIn that Gerry had had a very successful career utilizing his MSEE degree, received at the compliments of Bell Telephone Labs, Inc. My intent after having discovered the picture, was to contact him in San Jose, that being the last known residence of which I was aware. Gerry and I started work in the Bell System's Data Processing Department at BTL in 1959. Gerry approached me about renting a house in Scotch Plains, NJ with he and 2 other RPI graduates. We paid $200 per month for rent and $60 a month for utilities, I lived there with him until I got married 3 years later. THE RESCUE MISSION: One saturday evening in winter, when it was forecast to snow, Gerry and Saul Grohs were determined to go to Greewnich Village in Manhattan. Saul drove to Jersey City, where the chicks were that were going to accompany him to the Village.Gerry got in his large Mercury convertible {that had been previously owned by a retired school teacher (ho ho)}, and headed to Nutley to pick up someone named Colleen for their 1st date. Fast forward to the next day, after a "wicked" snow storm. Saul's car was buried in snow on a side street in Jersey City. He got in touch with me to rescue him. Put the chains on my car and went to Saul's rescue. Meanwhile, Gerry had attempted to get Colleen home the prior evening and, as he drove down an exit ramp off S3, the Mercury lodged in a large snow bank. "TOAST" With the warmth contributed by the convertible and a few blankets, they spent their 1st night together. Finally Gerry contacted me in the late afternoon. He was near the Newark Airport, could I come rescue them? Off to the Newark Airport area, picked them up and drove to Nutley, arriving early evening for Colleen's return. Tom and "Jerry" were close friends - me at 6' 2" and "Jerry", what 5' 5"? God Bless you and your Family Gerry.
