Fred was a mentor to me; we found connection in our shared rural agricultural background.  Fred told me once that "If you want to work in academia but don't go the PhD route, work in admissions or development.  If you are bringing in the talent or the money, you'll always have a seat at the table."  Twenty years later, I'm still grateful for that advice.
